Sports present a unique set of challenges to a video production company. There’s definitely always a story to tell, but how best to capture it? There’s a lot of fast-paced action to share, but how to ensure clarity on screen?
Getting any video content related to a sporting event, whether it’s of the competition or athlete interviews, requires a lot of forethought, technical know-how, and expertise. It’s imperative the set-up is just right, the crew understands the specific environment they’re working in, and everyone must be ready for things to change on the fly.
At Greyline Media, sports are our thing. We’ve combined our passion for athletics with video production to create some of the best content and graphics packages out there. For us, it’s all about how to make each sporting event, and the athletes involved, look the very best on screen.
One of the best things about sports is that they’re so much more than the actual competition. While that’s an essential component, there’s a bigger story about not only the athletes, but the fans as well. This was especially evident at the 2020 at the US Open. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, tennis pros descended on New York, but things looked and felt different.
Greyline was there to not only bring the players into the homes of the fans who couldn’t join us live, but also to bring the fans to the players. We produced powerful interviews and teasers for the event, but also watched as the players saw the jumbo screen light up with friends, family and fans zooming into the event.
It was an emotional time for everyone, and ensuring the heart of the event came across on screen was a key priority for the Greyline team.
Another way Greyline is able to support sporting events is to add impact through cohesive graphics packages. Preparing this content in advance, for use during live sporting events, changes the way viewers watch at home. Suddenly, the screen is more dynamic, the information is easier to read, and watching a game or match becomes about more than the action of play itself.
The importance of this essential component can easily be overlooked, but not at Greyline. We understand what’s necessary to package a sporting event for the fans who are watching from home.
At Greyline, we’re able to cover any type of sporting event, even those that might not fit into the everyday. Sure, we’re adept at golf, tennis, and more, but this year we got a special assignment, and it involved puppies.
Even a dog show can be a competition, and the Royal Canin Puppy Pre-show gave us a chance to produce entirely unique content. With crews in three separate locations, to maintain safe sets, we orchestrated an adorable competition of puppy videos. We had a set built, established a process for streaming the videos, and had our host remotely interact with our judges.
The show was filmed in LA and Florida, switched live in New York, and finalized in Connecticut. All of this happened in real-time, with everyone collaborating and adapting to these new conditions.
Shows like The Puppy Pre-Show are just one example of how production companies are having to get used to using new technology and new protocols to continue making quality videos. Everyone is climbing uphill to catch up to what production technology has to offer, but Greyline was able to begin establishing best practices quickly.
From the start of 2020 we began working with remote production teams, feeding footage taken on location at an event to an entirely different location for editing. This was something totally new for us, and the entire industry, but our crew’s expertise, willingness to adapt, and comfort in a fast-paced environment has led to very successful content.
Even after the pandemic is over, technology is here to stay in a major way for production teams like Greyline, and we’re excited to move forward and continue to improve our processes.
